Coat of Arms and Motto
Coat of Arms
Argent, a lion rampant sable between three flames,
a golden coronet of nobility with a helmet and mantling of leadership.
Crossed sabre's to distinguish a unique design that no other Sept may conquer.
There have been a number of variations and this image, I regard as probably the best match for the historical Molloy’s. It retains the traditional elements and is capped by a Crown, which indicates the noble rule of the family. The helmet shows both strength and bravery, whilst the shield has fire around the rampant lion. You will see there are two swords behind, these will become apparent after reading further.
The Family Motto.
Malo mori quam foedari - I would rather die than be dishonoured
Malo mori quam foedari is quite a common motto, for example see Payne, Lister, Ryan, Blazon amongst others and indeed to the uninitiated the Molloy’s.
Go back to our Gaelic friend Maolmhauidh and we now find an older motto: -
Gearaigh agus dogh buadh’ - Cut and Burn to Victory
This is linked to Conn Cetchanthach, Conn of 100 Battles a forefather of Maolmhauidh. This motto has no links to other Clans or anglicized families and is unique to the Molloy’s.
